Radiolaria
Image forthcomingdarkroom · LED interior · 3:4 · 10.5 × 10.5 × 21 in.

Inspired by the repeating silica structures of microscopic protozoa, Radiolaria is patterned with small concave faces that, when illuminated, create a bloom of light — patterns reminiscent of the petals of a flower.
Gallery
Concave facets refract one LED into a bloom of light. I took the shape from radiolaria — sea protozoa that build their skeletons out of silica, a lattice of glass, the same material I print.
The machine
Printed on G3DP2 — the molten-glass platform Lios carried forward from the MIT research machines and ran in the studio.
