Winthrop Center

For their new year-round, mixed-use building at the center of Boston's Financial District, Millennium Partners commissioned a sculpture to welcome visitors — one reflecting their vision for technology-driven design and Boston's local innovation talent. The iconic “W” is a slice of the building's crown facade, reimagined in a new process of additive and subtractive manufacturing.
The piece is one of a kind and was installed at the Winthrop Discovery Center in November 2020.
A slice of the crown facade, rebuilt in printed glass through a combined additive and subtractive process. Customized metal hardware frames the glass, and three intense light sources produce the refractive patterning unique to 3D printed glass.
Printed on G3DP2 — the molten-glass platform Lios carried forward from the MIT research machines and ran in the studio.
